Our speaker this month is Frances Malino, the Sophia Moses Robison Professor of Jewish Studies and History at Wellesley College and chair of the Jewish Studies Program. Frances is the author of various books on Sephardi Jewish history including The Sephardic Jews of Bordeaux: Assimilation and Emancipation in Revolutionary and Napoleonic France and A Jew in the French Revolution: The Life of Zalkind Hourwitz. She has extensively researched the involvement of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, a 19th century international Jewish organization that created a network of schools intended to modernize Jewish communities of the Ottoman Empire and North Africa .
