Yoni Rechter is synonymous with Israeli culture, having written and performed dozens of songs that are the backdrop to the Israeli experience (including his beloved "Hayalda Hachi Yafa Bagan"). Now, you can join him at The Vilna for an evening of music and conversation led by host Inbar Shifrin. Top Israeli jazz musicians from Berklee will accompany Yoni as he walks us through his career in song.
This program is part of the Studio Israel series, exploring Israeli culture through art and music. Presented in partnership with the Brandeis Schusterman Center for Israel Studies and the Hadassah Brandeis Institute.

Yoni Rechter
Composer, pianist, singer and arranger, Yoni Rechter has made a major contribution to Israeli music in a career spanning more than 40 years, and is considered among Israel’s most important musicians. In the dozens of songs that Yoni composed, he created a wide variety of styles, incorporating numerous influences, from sixties pop (mostly Beatles) to jazz, Israeli to classical, east and west, into a fascinating personal statement. Rechter always composes with originality, great sensitivity to text, and for the best performers. He is considered the mark of quality and integrity in Israeli music.
Inbar Shifrin
Inbar Shifrin is a PhD student in the music department and a fellow at the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies at Brandeis University. In her research she examines how Israeli identity is indicated in prayer in liberal and secular spaces. She is completing an additional MA degree in music and gender studies, where she focuses on the Israeli singer Ofra Haza and the ways in which Yemeniteness is symbolized and changes in her music. She came to Brandeis after completing a BA and MA in the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Inbar has been listening, playing and enjoying Yoni Rechter’s music since elementary school.
