“When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not wrong him. The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as one of your citizens; you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” (Leviticus 19:33-34).
20s/30s, join The Vilna and Repair the World to support Boston’s immigrant community in remembering that we, too, were once strangers in a strange land. In 1888, Lithuanian immigrants to Boston created what would become The Vilna Shul. As much as we are now a center for arts and culture, The Vilna is also a repository of decades of immigrant stories.
Together, let’s help welcome newcomers as we pack household supplies for immigrant families served by International Institute of New England (IINE), and learn how to support asylum seekers with the Massachusetts Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy (MIRA) Coalition. We’ll also make cards to welcome newly arriving immigrants.
IINE’s mission is to create opportunities for refugees and immigrants to succeed through resettlement, education, career advancement, and pathways to citizenship. Today, the International Institute of New England offers humanitarian relief, English language learning, employment, skills training, and immigration legal services to more than 10,000 people from 70+ different countries. From its beginning to the present, the International Institute of New England has assisted each new wave of refugees and immigrants from all over the world and served as a center of hospitality for many ethnic groups. With continued partnership from community groups and philanthropists throughout New England, IINE will continue this service for the next 100 years and beyond.
MIRA is the largest coalition in New England promoting the rights and inclusion of immigrants and refugees. With offices in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, we advance this mission through education and training, leadership development, institutional organizing, strategic communications, policy analysis and advocacy.
