Explore the history and life of former West Ender and Vilna Shul congregant and painter Hyman Bloom, and hear never before told stories from his widow, Stella Bloom. Bloom is one of the forefathers of abstract art in America. This film highlights the vibrant manifestation of Bloom’s imagination and his dedication to envision what others didn’t dare. He painted rabbis and Christmas trees, cadavers and autopsies, séances and the astral plane, the woods of Maine and the shimmer of opalescent pottery. Told with humor and irony Bloom’s story is not a bitter one. It is a triumph of art and of the spirit. Screening followed by a conversation with Blooms’s widow, Stella Bloom, film writer/director Angélica Allende Brisk, and Senior Curator of American Paintings/organizer of the current Hyman Bloom exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Erica E. Hirshler.

In the case of inclement weather, this film will be shown on Wednesday, January 15. In accordance with our refund policy, no credits will be issued if the original date is cancelled and the snow date is used.
