Why do we eat dairy of Shavuot?

The simplest explanation comes from Song of Songs (Shir ha'Shirim) 4:11: "Like honey and milk [the Torah] lies under your tongue." Likewise, the land of Israel is referred to as "a land flowing with milk and honey" in Deuteronomy 31:20. Another belief is that the gematria of the Hebrew word for milk, chalav (חלב), is 40, so the reasoning cited is that we eat dairy on Shavuot to remember the 40 days that Moses spent on Mount Sinai receiving the whole of the Torah (Deuteronomy 10:10). About the Speaker:
Vince Petryk graduated from Temple University with a degree in psychology (and an internship at Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute). Upon graduation, his ice cream career began at Hillary’s Ice Cream parlor in 1976 as he advanced from dishwasher to manager and ice cream maker. J.P. Licks was “born” in a renovated triple decker in Jamaica Plain in 1981, and he was just 26 years old. J.P. Licks’ mission is to create an environment where people savor the comfort and festivity of homemade ice cream and frozen yogurt, and its magical power to reconnect us to childhood pleasures with a single taste. J.P.Licks makes all of their ice cream and frozen yogurt from their own scratch recipes in their Jamaica Plain store and headquarters. They offer dozens of flavors of ice cream, with specialty flavors “rotated in”. The four most recent innovative “spicy hot” flavors are El Diablo, Wasabi, Tabasco and Virgin Bloody Mary Sorbet. Creating a niche in the ice cream cafe world, J.P. Licks is Kosher certified – meeting all the high quality standards required pertaining to ingredients, production and the store’s cleanliness. For 25 years, J.P. Licks has been and remains locally owned and operated.
